The Anadarko Spotlight is on John Mark Holten, a senior wrestler for the Warriors. This season Holten has notched a 28-5 overall record and is 8-0 in duels in the 182-pound weight class.

“I’ve done what I needed to do, worked hard to get where I am and I’m just ready to see what I can do at state,” said Holten.

Holten finished just one point shy of placing at the State Tournament as a junior and it taught him a valuable lesson.

“Every point counts and every little bit that can make a point it has to be done,” said Holten, “We’re all pretty close to each other and whoever works the hardest will win out.”

During his senior season Holten has been putting in more work and has also grown into a leader.

“I’ve been getting up at six every morning going to run and lift, working hard at practices and also doing extra runs and lifts with the team.  As a leader just trying to teach the younger guys who don’t have a lot experience and for some of the older guys that are really talented it’s just motivating them to reach their potential and work hard. Also make sure everyone is staying out of trouble and keeping their grades up.”

Looking ahead to the State Tournament Holten expects to place his season and says he’ll have one or two tough matches that could determine if he’s a State Champion.

Besides wrestling Holten was a standout on the football field this season. As a defensive end for the Warriors he tallied several sacks, forced four fumbles and deflected four passes. Holten also plays on the golf team and thinks he’ll have a chance to qualify for the state tournament this year.

Outside of sports Holten is involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Council and the Anadarko Leadership Class. He’s also a standout in the classroom with a 4.05 GPA.

Following high school John Mark will attend Southwestern Oklahoma State and major in biology. He hopes after college to attend medical school and become a Surgical Oncologist.
