Duncan Mom of the Month: Demetra Cox – Presented by Duncan Bank of Commerce

Demetra Cox and her family have called Duncan, Oklahoma home since moving there in 1999. Demetra and husband Dustin have raised two children in Duncan, both of which have played golf for Duncan High School.

“My family and I moved to Duncan in 1999 upon completion of my family medicine residency training and I have practiced family medicine here for the last 20 years.  I graduated from Snyder High School, Southern Methodist University, and University of Oklahoma College of Medicine,” said Demetra. “My husband, Dustin, and I have two children, Graham (20) and Gentry (17).  Graham is a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma. Both of my kids played varsity golf at Duncan High School.”

Gentry, a current member of the varsity golf team at Duncan High School, is only a junior, but could have a bright future ahead. Last season Gentry placed fourth at the Class 5A state tournament and was third at regionals. She was also named to the 2018 All-Area team. Demetra and several other golf parents recognize the golf teams at Duncan can use all of the support they can provide as a smaller group of parents, compared to other sports.

“Golf isn’t a sport that has large booster clubs supporting it so we try to do whatever we can to support the program, coaches, and players. We make snack bags for tournaments and help purchase fun outfits for regional and state tournaments. Our golf team members are the best of friends on and off the course and represent Duncan Public Schools in the best possible manner. They realize how blessed they are to be a part of such an amazing tradition and we enjoy watching them grow and flourish as fierce competitors and strong, confident young ladies,” said Demetra.

Demetra and Dustin are active in the Duncan community serving on several boards that help the citizens and students of Duncan.

“I currently serve on the Duncan Public Schools Board of Education and Duncan Public Schools Foundation Board. I have previously served as Chief of Staff at Duncan Regional Hospital and on the Duncan Regional Hospital Board of Directors,” said Demetra. “My husband, Dustin, has served on the Simmons Center Board and on the Duncan Area Economic Development Foundation and is the owner and administrator of Chisholm Trail Assisted Living in Duncan.”

Calling Duncan home is something the Cox family cherishes and they feel grateful for having the support of the community.

“We chose to move to Duncan 20 years ago because this community exemplifies small town tradition and values while always striving to be innovative and progressive,” said Demetra. “The residents of this community are like family and support and encourage each other’s successes.  We are so very grateful to have raised our children here and call it home.”
