The good news for the Comets is that in 2018, Dickson surged to the most wins in a season since 2013. The bad news is that most of those players are departed and coach Steve Day and his staff will be looking to a lot of youngsters to step up quickly and make their mark.

The only player back on offense with much experience is quarterback Rusty Beard (6-1, 209, Sr.) who started for the Comets last season. Johnny Smith (6-2, 175, So.) is a player that Day feels will help the offense but isn’t sure exactly where he’ll play at this point. Otherwise what the rest of the starting lineup will look like by Aug. 30 is pretty much anyone’s guess.

The news is a little better on defense but again, it will be a young group for the Comets. Beard is the lone senior and will start at linebacker. Three other names that Day mentions will comprise the secondary including Smith, Braydon Hamilton (6-2, 175, Jr.) and Jack McDonald (5-9, 140, Jr.). Day summed up what lays ahead for him and his staff: “We will be extremely young at all positions other than quarterback. We will rely heavily on young talent to develop and develop fast. Defensively we will change some concepts to adapt to our youth. We will be very basic but sound.” Having a returning quarterback is always a big plus but the Comets will have to find some talent to put around him to have a successful season.
