Altus’ Derek Beach – Character Counts Presented by Bar S Foods

The Altus Character Counts honor goes to senior quarterback Derek Beach. Entering his final season at Altus, Beach will now takeover as the starting quarterback and will start at defensive back.

Beach is well prepared for the opportunity to start at quarterback, he’s been a backup for the Bulldogs since the seventh grade.

“I’m as ready as I can be, I got a lot of varsity minutes last season and I feel pretty confident in myself,” said Beach.

Derek is a rushing quarterback with Altus running the triple-option. Beach scored his first varsity touchdown as a junior. He has high hopes for himself and the Bulldogs this season after an 8-3 record last season.

“I just want to do everything right, make all the right reads, know all my plays and make sure everyone around me knows the plays,” said Beach, “I think we can have a pretty good record, we can win all of our district games if we play well, there’s not a team we can’t beat and we control our own destiny this season.”

Taking over at quarterback and being a senior also means more of a leadership role for Beach, who says he’s ready.

“I just want to encourage the underclassmen and lead by example by just going hard in practice and in the weight room,” said Beach.

Outside of football, Derek is also a standout basketball player for the Bulldogs. He’s started at shooting guard since his sophomore season and averaged 11 points per game as a junior.

Beach is also really involved in FFA at Altus. In 2016 he was the champion in the Grand and Reserve divisions in Jackson County.

Derek is a stud in the classroom with a 4.3 GPA and is taking nine college credits this semester. After high school he plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in agricultural economics. He hopes to follow in his mom and brothers’ footsteps and become a loan officer.
