Elgin’s Dakota McMullin – Cameron University Athlete Spotlight

Elgin High School graduate and current Cameron University cross-country athlete Dakota McMullin knew there would be an adjustment to college athletics when he first arrived on campus.

“The biggest adjustment would be the practice schedule and the intensity of the workouts,” said McMullin.

But that intensity hasn’t slowed down the runner from Elgin. As a student-athlete in high school, McMullin knew how to balance school and athletics to make it an enjoyable experience and less like work. Getting to know his new teammates and coaches was part of that process.

“What I’ve enjoyed the most is getting to know my new teammates and coaches forming a new long lasting bond,” said McMullin.

McMullin, only a freshman, has decided to study business in college. He is excited to compete for Cameron when the time comes.

When he’s not crashing the books or hitting the track, you can find McMullin detailing vehicles, which he could possibly turn into a business one day.

“I enjoy detailing vehicles because it is what satisfies me and what I hope to turn into a career someday,” said McMullin.

As a new freshman, McMullin offers this advice to future student-athlete prospects looking to call Cameron University home.

“I would tell them to be committed and expect a higher level of training,” said McMullin.
