Ryan’s Juliet Spangler: Basketball Player Spotlight Presented by Harley-Davidson World OKC

By Derrick Smith

Juliet Spangler is thankful for the opportunities that playing sports has afforded her. She has been able to represent her school at a variety of events, as well as make and grow friendships. But Spangler has been able to do something that not too many high school athletes are able to.

“Throughout my years of playing basketball, I have been blessed to be able to travel overseas and compete,” she said. “I have competed in Australia and Costa Rica. It was awesome.”

Juliet is a senior at Ryan High School, where along with basketball, she also is a member of the cross country and track teams. She says that on the basketball court, she will play wherever her team needs her, but she mainly plays shooting guard or strong forward.

There have been people in her life that have helped her in different aspects along the way, but there are two people that Spangler says that she most grateful for.

“My parents have supported me in everything that I have done,” she said. “They have shown up to all my activities…and that always encourage and push me to be my best.”

Juliet says that she attributes her success to the work that she has put in during practice and offseason.

“There have been countless hours in the gym, the weight room, and conditioning,” she says. “I believe that success finds those who seek it and work hard to find it.”

One of her teachers at Ryan has taught Spangler more than just the school lessons, but instead, life lessons that she will be able to carry with her after high school.

“Mrs. Rhodes has become a favorite of mine because she teaches us that we should always try without being afraid to fail,” she said. “Because everyone will fail at some point in life, so you might as well try to achieve greatness with our fear.”

Other than athletics, Juliet is also a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and also Yearbook staff. She also serves as an officer for FCCLA, but the program was cut this year.
