Chickasha’s Deonte Wash – Athlete Spotlight Presented By Bank of Commerce

The Chickasha Athlete of the Month is Deonte Wash, a senior basketball player. Wash is the starting point guard and is the only senior for a young Chickasha team. “With me being the only senior, it’s really just to show the younger guys how to act in games,” said Wash, “and how to overcome adversity because we’ve had a problem with that this season. So just showing them how to respond.”

It’s clear that Wash takes his responsibility of being a leader very serious and his coaches ask a lot of him. “I just try to show the young guys how to respond to coaching, because when you’re young a coach yelling at you can have a negative impact so I’m just trying to teach them that the coach is just trying to help you learn and you can make it into a positive. I have a lot of responsibility on me just to make sure I’m going hard everyday in practice and showing them the right way to practice and get better. Also, just like watching film to learn opponents to be as prepared as I can possibly be. I try to make sure they stay in the classroom, because you must take of academics before sports,” said Wash.

Wash also gets it done in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA and is a member of NHS. After graduation he plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State to likely major in business.
